ROAD TRIP! RVing Off To College

The Good Life Travel

College towns are unique, full of school spirit and definitely worth packing up the RV and seeing what makes these towns special. We’re highlighting 5 of our favorite midwest college towns that have much more to offer besides lecture halls and exams. So pack up your suitcase, not your backpack, and get rolling!

Ann Arbor, MI

Thirty five miles west of Detroit you will find the home of the Wolverines. Ann Arbor is beautiful year ‘round and it didn’t get its “Tree Town” nickname for nothing. This college town is home to more than 50,00 trees and 157 municipal parks. In fact, we suggest visiting Nichols Aboretum where you can see native and exotic trees and shrubs masterfully crafted into a naturalistic landscape. And if you get tired of all that fresh air being pumped out of the trees, you can stop by the Hands-On Museum for some learning fun, a great spot for the kids!

State College, PA

A town can’t get much more collegiate when its name is State College. This Pennsylvania gem has a lot to offer. To get your outdoor fix, try hiking up Mt Nittany. This 2-8 mile path is a very popular hiking destination close to Penn State. It’s 600 vertical feet, and will take you no more than 4-5 hours to see the whole mountain- a perfect way to spend the day! And, if you’re feeling artsy, we suggest you take a look at the masterpieces in the Plamer Museum of Art. The palmer is know for valuable collections of pottery from Asia and the Americas, as well as a collection of American art and pieces from around the globe. It’s a small museum, but its diverse collection is worth seeing. Oh yea, and it’s free admission!

Columbus, OH

If you consider yourself a history buff, you’ll want to stop by the Ohio Statehouse. It’s filled with priceless amazing historic art, including a marble bust of Abraham Lincoln – the only one the President posed for during his lifetime. Even the Statehouses expansive grounds have a history, as Civil War Union soldiers frequently camped there. You can take a look at the museum and shop and even get a guided tour! Just south of downtown, you will find German Village. This historic neighborhood in Columbus offers a unique cultural experience filled with dining and shopping.

Lawrence, KS

Rock chalk shop! When you are in the home of the Jay hawks, you will want to get some shopping down on Massachusetts Street. This historic neighborhood offers plenty of spots to eat, drink and shop. Once you’ve shopped until you’ve dropped, you might need a little relaxation in nature. Then you should definitely go to Clinton State Park. This beautiful outdoor area is on the southwest side of Lawrence. There, you can do plenty of activities like sailing, hiking and swimming.

Omaha, NB

This town has a lot more to offer than corn husking. If you want to get in touch with your wild side, the Omaha Zoo is a must see. One of the most well-known zoos in the midwest, you can see any animal imaginable, from monkeys, to lions tigers and bears… oh my! The zoo is a great way to spend the day with your family, but if you’re looking for even more fun, it doesn’t get much more fun than the Fun-Plex. Here you can get your adrenaline fix with coasters and water slides. Talk about fun.
